Streaming News to Watch For in 2023
From streaming service launches to new content being added to our favorite platforms, there’s a lot to look forward to in the world of streaming in 2023. Here are some highlights of what to expect:
HBO Max and Discovery+ to merge
Warner Bros-owned HBO Max and Discovery+ are poised to merge into one streaming service. This new streaming service will the reality programming of Discovery+ with the library of television and movies on HBO Max. It is unknown what the name or pricing of this new streaming service will be, but it is expected to launch in spring of 2023.
EPIX relaunching as MGM+
On January 15, 2023, EPIX is rebranding itself as MGM+. With the same rate of $5.99, its content will also remain the same and the launch will coincide with the season three premiere of Godfather of Harlem. However, the brand will shift its focus to include more original programming, as well as more of the MGM film library.
NFL Sunday Ticket moves to YouTube TV
Earlier this year, the NFL announced its intention to end its years-long deal with DirecTV and move its NFL Sunday Ticket program to a streaming service. Amazon, Apple, ESPN and YouTube were all contenders to be the 2023 home of the NFL Sunday Ticket. It was recently announced that exclusive streaming rights would be granted to YouTube TV. The NFL Sunday Ticket broadcasts out-of-market NFL games.
Netflix introduces ad-supported level
At the end of 2022, Netflix introduced its new ad-supported tier. Thanks to this new plan, users can access all the same content they know and love from Netflix at a lower price, with the addition of ads. For $6.99 a month, Netflix customers can expect 4-5 minutes of ads per hour of content.
